1988: Gay and lesbian students and community groups were responding to incidents of homophobic violence and other anti-gay and anti-lesbian acts on the MSU campus, and at the same time a group of faculty were starting to form into an interest group. Following the expression of interest by a number of faculty members, the first meeting of a Gay and Lesbian Discussion Group took place during the 1988-1989 academic year.

Fall of 1989: A subgroup of faculty members at Michigan State undertook a review of the university document on diversity, the MSU IDEA (Institutional Diversity: Excellence in Action) for its inclusion of issues related to sexual orientation and its reference to the needs of lesbians and gay men. This led to the creation of a task force on gay and lesbian communities.

1992: The results of a campus wide climate survey conducted by the task force suggested need for an additional special office for ‘lesbian, gay, and bisexual concerns’.

1993: First ever reception and resource fair for lesbian-bi-gay students and allies will allow them to establish contacts, find supportive organizations and businesses and listen to speakers addressing their concerns
